eXplore Bellevue

Bellevue, WA Community

On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the Bellevue Downtown Association (BDA) hosted the second installment of its Urban Forum series: “Projects Shaping the Grand Connection (Part 2).” Held from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM, this members-only event brought together urban planners, developers, and community leaders to discuss the transformative projects redefining downtown Bellevue’s landscape.

The forum offered attendees an in-depth look at the multi-layered developments shaping the Grand Connection, a key urban corridor linking downtown Bellevue to surrounding districts through pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, public spaces, and regional trail systems.

Exploring the Future of Bellevue’s Downtown Corridor

This forum continued the conversation started earlier in the year, offering an updated perspective on how public, private, and grassroots efforts are working together to create a more connected and accessible urban environment.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with the experts leading these transformative projects and gained insight into Bellevue’s broader vision for sustainable, community-centered growth.

Key Highlights from the Forum

The event featured four impactful presentations:

🔹 Nathan Torgelson – Grand Connection I-405 Crossing

Nathan Torgelson, Director of the Office of the Grand Connection, shared an update on the I-405 Crossing, a major infrastructure initiative that will eventually connect downtown Bellevue to the Wilburton commercial district. His presentation highlighted the project’s design approach, updated timeline, and how the crossing will enhance mobility, pedestrian safety, and economic activity.

🔹 Sarah Langton – Friends of the Grand Connection

Sarah Langton, Principal at Langton Public Affairs, discussed the work of Friends of the Grand Connection, a community coalition advocating for inclusive, people-focused urban development. Langton emphasized the value of public participation and how collective advocacy has shaped key aspects of the Grand Connection’s design and implementation.

🔹 Steve Kramer & Andrew Coates – Eastrail Integration

From KGIP, Steve Kramer and Andrew Coates provided an overview of how the Grand Connection aligns with Eastrail, a regional 42-mile trail system. They highlighted the opportunity this integration presents for mixed-use development, public space activation, and expanded mobility options across the Eastside.

🔹 Katherine Hollis – Completing the Eastrail Vision

Katherine Hollis, Executive Director of Eastrail Partners, closed the forum with a look at what’s next for the Eastrail corridor. She detailed efforts to complete missing links in the trail, the partnerships driving progress, and how a fully connected Eastrail will transform commuting and recreation across the region.

A Stronger, More Connected Bellevue

The July 16 forum provided valuable insight into the collaborative spirit powering Bellevue’s urban evolution. From bold infrastructure to grassroots engagement, each speaker illustrated how their work contributes to a city that’s more walkable, connected, and ready for the future.

The Bellevue Downtown Association continues to provide a platform for dialogue and learning as the city’s urban vision takes shape. Stay tuned for more updates and future events as the Grand Connection and other transformative projects continue to unfold.
