Bellevue, WA Community

Bellevue truly knows how to honor its heroes! Last week, the Eastside Veterans Day Ceremony brought our community together to celebrate the incredible service and sacrifice of our veterans. It was a day filled with reflection, remembrance, and a deep sense of gratitude. We saw neighbors, friends, and families gather to pay tribute to those who have served our nation, making it a truly moving experience for everyone present.

This year’s ceremony was particularly special, marking significant milestones in our nation’s military history. We took time to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the End of the Vietnam War, a crucial moment in American history that deserves our continued remembrance. Additionally, the event celebrated the impressive 250th birthdays of three of our vital service branches: the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Navy. These anniversaries provided a powerful backdrop to honor the enduring legacy of these institutions and the individuals who have served within them.

A truly inspiring figure, Lieutenant Colonel Hank Cramer (U.S. Army, Retired), served as the keynote speaker. LTC Cramer’s personal connection to military service is profound; he is known as America’s first Gold Star Son of the Vietnam War, having lost his father at a young age. His own distinguished 28-year career in the Army added a deeply personal and impactful dimension to his address. His words resonated with the audience, reminding us all of the sacrifices made by so many families throughout our nation’s history.

The ceremony itself was a carefully curated program designed to evoke respect and honor. The Posting of Colors by the U of WA Air Force ROTC Color Guard set a solemn tone, followed by remarks from the esteemed Mayor of the City of Bellevue. What made this year’s event particularly unique was the presence of Army, Navy, and Marine Corps representatives dressed in colonial attire, a striking visual nod to the founding of these service branches and their long-standing traditions. This historical representation beautifully underscored the significance of the 250th anniversaries being celebrated.

Beyond the historical commemorations, the heart of the ceremony lay in recognizing every individual who has served. Senior participants extended heartfelt acknowledgments to all Veterans and First Responders in attendance, ensuring that everyone felt seen and appreciated. The poignant sound of bagpipes filled the air, guiding the emotional journey of the event, and the solemn playing of Taps brought a reflective silence, a powerful reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by many. These moments truly captured the spirit of gratitude and remembrance that defined the day.

The Eastside Veterans Day Ceremony in Bellevue was more than just an event; it was a testament to our community’s unwavering support for our military personnel and their families. It provided a vital opportunity to connect with our past, acknowledge the present, and inspire future generations to understand and value the contributions of our veterans. Events like these strengthen our local bonds and remind us of the sacrifices that have shaped our freedoms. We look forward to continuing this tradition and further honoring those who have served our country so bravely.
